Bolzano/Bozen is the capital of South Tyrol and only 15 minutes from Andriano/Andrian on the wine road. Bolzano/Bozen has more than 100,000 inhabitants and is the largest town in the region and the only one with more Italians than German-speaking residents. When you visit Bolzano/Bozen, you definitely should see the Waltherplatz, the
Ötzi museum, the fruit market,
Castle Runkelstein, the
Museion – museum for modern art, the Bolzano/Bozen cathedral, as well as the Lauben (porticos) with its shops. At the Sieges und Gerichtsplatz (victory and court plaza), the fascist buildings remind you of a sad history.
If you drive in the opposite direction, you’ll come to the spa town of
Merano/Meran. Merano is a very quaint town, extremely well cared for and even mundane. Visit the ‘
Therme‘ (spa facilities), the
Gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff, the Passerpromenade, the Tappeinerweg (Tappeiner walk) and the historic town centre.
